Coiled grass basket weaving is a traditional Inuit practice across the Arctic. Dried grasses from the Arctic tundra had many uses, since dried grass repels water and can act as an insulator. Evidence of prehistoric coiled baskets has been found throughout the Arctic. Stitches are started at the bottom of the basket, where they begin to coil around until the basket is completed. Designs can be stitched onto the basket using material like dehaired sealskin, or woven into the basket itself using colored wax-lined cord. These baskets are very time consuming and difficult to make; it is not unusual for a larger basket to take over a month to complete.
