Arctic ceramics production occurs in Kangiqliniq (Rankin Inlet). Though the creation of ceramics by Inuit is a fairly recent activity, evidence of Thule ceramics created in the ninth century that were fired and glazed through regular cooking oil does exist. In 1987 the Matchbox Studios opened in Kangiqliniq. Started by Jim Shirley, the studio sought to revive the production of ceramics in the community and has been successful in doing so. Many of the ceramics produced today are characterized by their use of the vessel shape and sculptural appliqués.
