Sculpture from the Kitikmeot is very distinct - artists here like to play with expressions and proportions and use mixed media to highlight certain elements of the work, creating figures that are first glance grotesque and severe. This relates directly to the unique character of spirituality in the region, which was the last to have contact with qalunaat, or non-Aboriginal Westerners. Sculpting here is quite tough because the local stone is very hard to work with. Despite this, and the works' immediate impression of severity, many of the carvings produced in this region display a great deal of humour if you look closely.
